Proven, cheap, reliable. probably doable with tincan motors. Can do things with many materials. The actual HEAD is dirt cheap, and eminently hackable.
Possible improvements:
use tubing to move material reservoir off of the machine. then larger amount could be used, AND you could have 3-4 materials INSTANTLY available without a tool change. talk about sexy!

worm drive plastic extruder. pretty complicated, has issues, but does work.
EGADS why didn't I think of this. crazy easy, you can use super-fine tip sharpies. basically becomes a pcb plotter. Less resolution than inkjet, but 10000 times better than hand-drawn.
